You did it! You raised over £50,000 to create a Norway For Whales

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Welcome to your November enews

As we approach the end of 2023, I want to say a massive thank you for all your support. You have been instrumental in protecting whales and dolphins around the globe. But now, these remarkable beings need us more than ever.

In October, I shared the devastating news of the sudden deaths of 100 river dolphins in the Amazon’s rivers and lakes, and I am saddened to report that this number has risen to 155 individuals. Investigations are ongoing, but with water temperatures reaching that of a hot bath, the climate crisis is the main cause. Click on the link below to read the full story, but please note that some of the images are distressing.

FULL STORY

Your support has kept us at the forefront of river dolphin conservation for more than three decades, but this tragic event serves as a stark warning that we need to do more to protect whales and dolphins, for their sake, and our own. And that’s exactly what we plan to do.

Thanks to you, this December, we’ll be at COP28 – the biggest climate event of the year – where we’ll engage with world governments to discuss our climate solutions. You and I know that whales, dolphins and porpoises are our climate allies, and this event gives us the opportunity to share our important message: save the whale, save the world.

Keep an eye on our inbox at the beginning of December as I’ll be sending you a special email explaining why we’re at COP28, what we hope to achieve, plus everything you need to know about how whales and dolphins are vital in our battle against the climate crisis and the destruction of nature.

Thank you so much for your continued support. Together, we will create a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free.

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Welcome to your October enews

Since your last e-newsletter, the 2023 whaling season in Iceland has closed. I am saddened to tell you that 25 majestic fin whales fell victim to the harpoons. Of course that’s 25 too many, but it could have been so much worse. You helped to secure a temporary suspension of the hunts over the summer which saved approximately 120 whales, and we’re feeling hopeful that the end of Icelandic whaling is in sight. Years of campaigning has paid off and the majority of the Icelandic public now opposes whaling. Thank you once again for all your support!

For now, the future of the hunts remains uncertain, but I can promise you that we will do everything we can to prevent the ships from leaving the harbour in June 2024 for another hunt season – I will keep you updated. For the full story, please click on the link below.

The Pressure Is on the Miami Seaquarium to Release ‘The Loneliest Whale’ Into a Seaside Sanctuary

https://www.peta2.com/news/miami-seaquarium-release-lolita-sea-sanctuary/

The Miami Beach City Commission has unanimously passed Mayor Philip Levine’s resolution calling on the Miami Seaquarium to release the aquarium’s lone orca, Lolita, immediately into a seaside sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest.

In an Instagram post, Mayor Levine said that he’s now asking all other Florida mayors to join him in urging the Miami Seaquarium to do the right thing.

Along with thousands of activists, Mayor Levine has been calling on the aquarium to release Lolita into a more spacious habitat for years.

Lolita’s story is heartbreaking. At only 4 years old, she was torn away from her family and ocean home during the largest capture of wild orcas in history. Humans abducted her and six other orcas and sold them to marine parks as mere commodities.

The Miami Seaquarium purchased the 7,000-pound orca for only $6,000 to confine her for fleeting human entertainment.

She’s the sole survivor of the horrifying capture and has spent the past 47 years in the world’s tiniest orca tank—which violates the federal Animal Welfare Act’s minimum size requirements.

Lolita spends her days floating listlessly in her barren tank. She has no mental, physical, or emotional stimulation and no opportunity to engage in any natural types of behavior, like communicating with others of her species. She currently shares her tank with a few Pacific white-sided dolphins, who frequently attack her, and has no orca companions. In 1980, her former orca tankmate, Hugo, killed himself after repeatedly smashing his head into the walls of the tank.

But there’s hope! A protected coastal sea pen off Washington’s San Juan Islands would allow her to experience greater freedom of movement and give her the opportunity to see and communicate with the orca believed to be her mother and the rest of her long-lost family members, who still spend much of their time in the area.

UK dolphins need you !

UK dolphins, porpoises and whales need your help

Whales and dolphins can’t breathe underwater. Trapped in a net, they will panic, just like you would. Many endure terrible wounds and broken bones as they try to escape. When they can’t struggle anymore, they will close their blowhole and suffocate.

Will you help keep them safe by signing our petition on Care2 now?

Thousands of dolphins, porpoises and whales die in fishing gear every year in UK seas. Most of the protection they have comes from the EU. But, after Brexit they won’t even have that. What then? Even more could die.

I know you’ve helped our campaigns before and I hope we can count on you again. Your support is incredibly valuable. Please spare a few seconds to sign this important petition. Urge the governments of the UK to put laws in place to protect dolphins, porpoises and whales once Britain leaves the EU.

We can win this campaign if we all stand together, so we’ve teamed up with our friends at the petition site, Care2. We must show Ministers that people care about dolphins, porpoises and whales dying in UK seas.

Thank you for taking a few moments to sign. It’s a simple thing to do but can make a big difference. Let’s stop the suffering.

Thank you

With my very best wishes,

Julia Thoms, WDC campaigns manager
