HELP MICHELIN TO TAKE WHALES OFF THE MENU — WDC

We’ve been engaging with Michelin to urge them to change the course and stop endorsing restaurants that have whale meat on the menu. We need your help to show that the public is behind this action by encouraging Michelin to make the right decision.

Will you help Michelin to take whales off the menu?

Michelin represents the gold standard in fine dining. If you think about excellence in the restaurant industry, you probably think about Michelin with its stars and its guide. So, it might come as a shock to hear that the Michelin Guide recommends eating in restaurants that have whale meat on the menu, and even rewards some with a Michelin Star.

It's time for Michelin to change the course.

For 18 months, we’ve been lobbying Michelin to change their standards and we’ve made great progress. We’ve had some extremely positive conversations with Michelin, and they want to work with us to do the right thing.

We have Michelin's attention ... Will you help them make the right decision?

We want Michelin to change the course and ensure that restaurants that serve whale meat are no longer included in the Michelin Guide and can no longer receive a star. We need you to show that the public is behind them, encouraging them to make the right decision. Together we can take whales off the menu.

How will things change?

You might wonder how getting Michelin to help us take whales off the menu in fine dining restaurants will make a difference. Most of us don’t eat in Michelin-starred restaurants, and if we do, it’s rare treat. But Michelin are hugely influential.

Many of our TV chefs have a Michelin Star and it’s the dream of aspiring cooks on shows like Masterchef. A firm stand by Michelin will send a clear message, throughout the world of food, that eating whales is unacceptable.

Why should Michelin Change the course?
Eating whales is bad for the planet

Whales are worth more to us alive in the ocean than dead on a plate.

Image: Food review. 'Whales are climate giants. We need them to help tackle the climate and biodiversity crises.'

The ocean is our greatest climate crisis solution, absorbing more carbon and releasing more oxygen than all of Earth’s forests combined – we all need a healthy ocean, and that means whales.

Image: Food review. ' Many whale species are endangered, threatened of vulnerable. There is no such thing as sustainable whaling. We need more whales not fewer.
2. Eating whales is cruel

Whales are intelligent, sentient, self-aware, emotional beings.

Being chased by a boat and shot by a harpoon that explodes inside their body is a terrifying and agonising way to die.

It’s common for multiple harpoons to be used to kill a whale and it can take up to two hours for a harpooned whale to die.

Pregnant females are often the victims of hunting as they are slower and therefore easier to target. This means the next generation of whales die with their mothers.

3 gold st
We're asking Michelin to change the course so that:
If a restaurant has whale on the menu, it will be ineligible for a Michelin Star or for inclusion in the Michelin Guide No threatened, vulnerable or endangered species can be served in Michelin starred restaurants or those in the Michelin Guide Michelin will not endorse restaurants if their menus feature species that have been protected through international agreements, like the global whaling ban

🐳🐬Your February whale and dolphin update🐳🐬

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation
SUCCESS! We saved thousands of dolphins in France. Image: A group of common dolphins leaping out of the ocean.

Welcome to your February enews

The year has just begun, and thanks to your support, we already have positive news to share!

Every year, more than 9,000 common dolphins die in fishing nets in the Bay of Biscay. Now, following years of campaigning by us and our friends in other organisations, the French government has banned almost all commercial fishing activities in this area from 22nd January to 20th February.

This is a monumental win for the dolphins, and for all of us who have having been working hard behind the scenes for action, including you. Strategically timed during a peak fishing season, this one-month closure of fisheries has the potential to save thousands of dolphins. Although the ban’s duration is shorter than we’d hoped, it is an indicator that the French government is committed to finding solutions to this long-standing issue.

Your support was pivotal in achieving this victory. Because of you, these majestic beings can enjoy a much-needed respite from the constant threat of entanglement. Thank you so much.

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Welcome to your October enews

Since your last e-newsletter, the 2023 whaling season in Iceland has closed. I am saddened to tell you that 25 majestic fin whales fell victim to the harpoons. Of course that’s 25 too many, but it could have been so much worse. You helped to secure a temporary suspension of the hunts over the summer which saved approximately 120 whales, and we’re feeling hopeful that the end of Icelandic whaling is in sight. Years of campaigning has paid off and the majority of the Icelandic public now opposes whaling. Thank you once again for all your support!

For now, the future of the hunts remains uncertain, but I can promise you that we will do everything we can to prevent the ships from leaving the harbour in June 2024 for another hunt season – I will keep you updated. For the full story, please click on the link below.

Following the positive impact your efforts made in Iceland, I’m excited to share our plans to end pilot whale hunts in the Faroes. Welcome to your September enews

It’s safe to say that it’s been a month of highs and lows for whales and dolphins around the globe. I want to say a huge thank you for your continued support.

Let’s kick off with some good news …

On 8 September, the WDC team and I stood united outside 10 Downing Street and presented our #EndCaptivityForever petition. We were there to represent you and the whales and dolphins, so thank you. We are calling on the government to make it illegal to hold a whale or dolphin in a tank in the UK ever again. We’re forging relationships with MPs who can champion a legal ban on whale and dolphin captivity.

The WDC team handing over the #EndCaptivityForever petition at 10 Downing Street.

On a more sombre note …

Sadly, the suspension on whaling has been lifted and XX fin whales have been slaughtered in Icelandic waters. But, there’s still hope. One of the whaling ships has been suspended for violating animal welfare regulations, and there’s a proposed bill to ban whaling. I will bring you the full story in your October enews, but please rest assured that we are working extremely hard behind the scenes to permanently end whaling in Iceland.

Welcome to your May enews

We’re so grateful for your amazing support for whales and dolphins, but before you read on, the whales in Iceland need you more than ever.

A new report has exposed the true horror of Iceland’s whale hunt. But the Icelandic fisheries minister seems to think that the lack of protest means we don’t care. This is your opportunity to be heard!

ACT NOW

Your voice is powerful in the fight to protect whales and dolphins. An amazing 9,107 of our supporters have already acted. Will you help us get to 10,000? Click/tap the button above to send our pre-prepared email to the Icelandic ambassador, and let’s end the slaughter for good.

On behalf of everyone here at WDC, thank you for your continued support. We wouldn’t be able to protect dolphins and whales around the world without you.

Suffering exposed

The Icelandic government’s own report has revealed the cruelty of its hunts. Some of the fin whales killed took two long hours to die. But the hunts may be allowed to continue in just a few weeks.

Living together

Fishing nets are bad news for dolphins and porpoises. So we’re working with local fishers in Hong Kong and Sarawak, Borneo to identify areas that dolphins, porpoises and people overlap to make sure they can coexist.

You have the chance to stop whale hunting in Iceland

TAKE ACTION NOW

Whale with harpoons

It’s too late for this poor whale, but a few moments of your time could save others.

The future of whaling in Iceland is at a tipping point. A new report from the Icelandic government has revealed the true horror of its whale hunts. But they seem to think that the lack of protest about these shocking revelations means that the world doesn’t care.

Iceland's foreign minister

‚There has been little discussion of the report in the world press and on social media … embassies have not received any calls or e-mails from the public.‘

Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs

We need to change this now! Let’s make sure they hear us loud and clear.

It’s easy to help. Just click/tap the button below and send our pre-prepared email to the Icelandic embassy. Tell them the world is watching and now is the time to stop whaling for good. It’s all set up for you so it’ll take no time at all but really could save lives.

Thank you so much, your support does make a difference.

Julia Pix, WDC

These shocking findings could help stop the slaughter for good:

  • Some whales had to be harpooned three or four times before they died
  • One of the whales took 58 minutes to die and another suffered for two hours
  • One whale was lactating, so her death left a young fin whale without a mother
