Wir wollen wissen, was Sie denken.

Cruel hunts

The pointless whale hunt season in Norway has come to an end with 414 minke whales killed, slightly down on the 507 slaughtered last year. Together, we are inspiring the wave of change that will end these hunts.

Thank you for helping to end captivity forever

This summer, you’ve been instrumental in encouraging UK tourists not to visit whale and dolphin shows or participate in swim-with-dolphin experiences while they are on holiday. Thanks to you, our message is reaching more people than ever.

We’ve been running adverts online, targeting people searching for holidays and days out in destinations that have captive whale and dolphin attractions. But we also had big plans to display them in departure lounges of several UK airports.

On 15th August, we launched these adverts at Glasgow Airport, but just 10 days later, all the airports pulled out – they were worried that our message would upset the airlines. We worked hard to reassure them, pointing out that thanks to your efforts, all of their airline partners, except TUI, no longer promote captive facilities. Despite this, it was too late to reverse the decision.

While this was massively disappointing, it didn’t stop us …

It's time for plan B

Instead, we took our important message on the road. We displayed our ads on huge mobile screens, targeting passengers heading to the airport to fly to Tenerife and other key destinations. Click on the link below to watch our journey.

Don't Go To The Show

WATCH FILM

With over a million passengers passing through Bristol Airport in August, and our eye-catching ads prominently displayed on roads approaching the airport, it was impossible for travellers to ignore our message.

Before you read on to find out the latest from our #DontGoToTheShow campaign, we want to say a big thank you for enabling us to do the work we do.

Together, we will end captivity forever.

Don't Go To The Show
Reasons not to support cruelty when you go on holiday. Many captive whales and dolphins suffer terrible fates, and the stories of these individuals are no exception.
Morgan. The loneliest orca. Image: Morgan the orca behind the glass in a confined tank
Morgan has been captive at Loro Parque in Tenerife for 13 long years. She was never freed as originally planned but instead used for entertainment and breeding. Tragically, her baby, Ula died a few weeks before her third birthday. Morgan’s world should be vast and dominated by family, but her reality is a small and disturbing place.
Shadow & Chelmers. A tragic end. Image: Possibly Shadow and Chelmers performing in a captive show.
Shadow and Chelmers died from brain damage after a rave was held at the facility they were held in. The were exposed to dangerously high noise levels, and a heroin substitute was found in their urine. A keeper said Chelmers was drifting underwater, foaming at the mouth for an hour before he died.
Corky. A lifetime in confinement. Click to watch Corky's story. Image: Corky in captivity being fed from a bucket of frozen fish.
The thing is, Some people don’t realise that whales’ and dolphins’ mental and physical health suffers in captivity or that they often die early. With your support, we're raising awareness to make people ink twice before visiting. And we've got some friends to help out.
Poet Matt Harvey has been helping us explain that although dolphins may look like they're smiling, they're actually suffering. Click to watch. Image: Dolphin looking like they're smiling.
Captive facilities promote their shows as once-in-a-lifetime experiences with happy whales and dolphins, but we know this isn’t true. ProCartoonist Glenn Marshall has been using his cartoons to cut through this lie and make people reconsider the cruelty of these shows. Click to watch. Image: Glenn Marshall's Les Mis cartoon - a dolphin in handcuffs on a show stage.
Children will shape the future. Adults might think that taking children to a show will be a thrilling experience, but when we asked 2,000 kids how they really feel we realised they have more empathy than we think.
Children looking at a dolphin through glass

WHAT KIDS REALLY THINK

FOUR THINGS YOU CAN DO: Talk to children you know - if they say they don’t want to go to the show, their families are less likely to go. Talk to friends and family before they go on holiday! See them in the wild on a boat trip. It's thrilling, more rewarding and often cheaper. Don't be tempted by swim-with-dolphins experiences - the experience will be in a sea pen or a tank

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation
Thank you for helping end captivity forever.

Welcome to your August enews

As the summer holidays draw to a close, we want to say a massive thank you for your help in encouraging UK tourists not to go to whale and dolphin shows or swim-with-dolphins experiences while they are abroad. Look out for your special Don’t Go To The Show campaign email next Thursday for all the latest news.

Because of your support over the past year, we’ve made giant strides towards ending captivity forever – let’s take a moment to reflect on all we’ve achieved together.

  • Last year marked 30 years since the last dolphinarium in the UK closed its doors
  • You enabled us to host an event at the Houses of Parliament making MPs aware that whale and dolphin captivity has not yet been banned in the UK
  • We took your signatures to 10 Downing Street, urging the UK government to make it illegal to hold a whale or dolphin in a tank
  • You convinced Thomas Cook, easyJet holidays and Jet2holidays to stop selling tickets to these cruel circuses

We have a long way to go and some big plans, and with your support, we will do everything we can to make this generation of captive whales and dolphins the last.

Before you dive into your whale and dolphin updates, click on the link below to discover everything else you made possible for whales, dolphins and porpoises in 2023.

HELP STOP THE HUNTS

#Don'tGo to the show

Welcome to your July enews

We want to say a massive thank you for all your support in our campaign to end whale and dolphin captivity. Over the last decade, you’ve helped us convince tour operator after tour operator to stop promoting attractions that keep whales and dolphins in tanks for human entertainment. Just this year, easyJet holidays and Jet2holidays became the latest major travel companies to stop selling tickets to these cruel circuses.

But, the thing is, UK tourists still flock to these attractions when they are on holiday, and swimming with dolphins remains high on many people’s ‚bucket lists‘.

That’s why this summer, we’ve launched our new #DontGoToTheShow campaign. We’re running ads in UK airports and online to encourage holidaymakers to think twice before visiting captive whale or dolphin attractions while they are abroad.

Don't support cruelty when you are on holiday. Orcas and dolphins performing in shows for human entertainment.

We’re sure people don’t intend to support cruelty; they just don’t realise that the dolphin or orca is trapped, forced to perform for tourist after tourist, over and over again, all day, every day, long after holidaymakers have gone home.

Thank you so much for all your support. Together, we will end captivity forever.

Norway for whales

Welcome to your April enews

Thank you so much for your continued support in protecting whales and dolphins everywhere. Before we dive into your monthly news update, we have an incredible opportunity to share with you.

For this week only, your donation will be doubled! Every year, more than 500 whales are killed by Norwegian hunters. The whaling ships are out at sea right now, and this year, the Norwegian government is allowing the whalers to slaughter even more whales. It’s frightening!

But you can change this …

Donate between 18 - 25 of April and your donation will be doubled!

DONATE TODAY

Here’s the thing, one in four Norwegians agrees with us that it’s time to end whaling in Norway, and one in four disagrees. That leaves half the population undecided or with no opinion, meaning that half the population can be swayed either way. Whaling is not an everyday concern for most Norwegians and condemnation hasn’t stopped the killing.

It’s time for a fresh approach.

Change must come from within Norway, so we will mobilise a #WaveOfChange in Norway, inspiring and supporting Norwegian people to end the hunts. We’ll bring together people from all backgrounds, from activists to politicians and lawyers, establishing networks who will push for an end to whaling and create a Norway For Whales.

We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have already signed our letter to Michelin, encouraging them to change the course in the restaurant industry. Because of you, we’ve had an early breakthrough.

Re-whale the ocean on World Rewilding Day 🐳🌍 — WDC

For us, for them, for the planet 🌍

An oval shaped GIF with bubble graphics on the left and right bottom corners. The GIF shows a humpback with it's baby, some dolphins swimming in clear blue sea and two poilot whales which swim close to the camera. This plays on a loop.

Happy World Rewilding Day 2024!

Rewilding is a conservation method with a focus on the restoration of wild animal populations, whilst restoring habitats and eliminating threats different species face. This helps to create a resilient planet and inspiration for a sustainable future. Traditionally, rewilding projects have focused on land, which amounts to just 29% of the planet. But this World Rewilding Day, we’re focusing on the other 71% – the ocean.

That’s where you come in. We need to re-whale the ocean! Whales are natures Climate Giants, because just by existing they help the ocean absorb more carbon and release more oxygen than all of Earth’s forests combined. We need to restore the number of whales and dolphins to their pre-hunting populations to helpre-whale the ocean. But we can only do this with your help.

1. Support groundbreaking research to increase our understanding of the climate and biodiversity roles that whales play

2. Unlock technology to gather data and unlock a wave of new policy changes to eliminate the threats whales face

3. Continue campaigns to educate people about these magnificent creatures
