We are heartbroken for the people and animals of Mexico, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and other parts of the Caribbean, as they struggle in the wake of the recent string of disasters. But help has arrived, and more is on the way.
Two members of our Animal Rescue Team helping with the prior hurricane in the British Virgin Islands sheltered in place as Maria approached. They endured the storm so that they could respond immediately. Other members of our team are poised to depart for Puerto Rico as soon as it is possible to get there. Our HSI/Mexico staff are rushing back to Mexico City after providing emergency animal rescue to more than 1,000 animals affected by the September 7th earthquake in Oaxaca. Having already distributed over seven tonnes of cat and dog food, they’re currently making plans to work with local groups and shelters to provide more assistance in communities nearby.
We are stretched thin as never before. Please consider making an urgent gift to our International Disaster Relief Fund to help animals affected by these and other disasters.
Our thoughts are with all who are suffering as a result of these catastrophes, including those still recovering from hurricanes in Texas and Florida. Humane Society International and The Humane Society of the United States will be at the forefront of rescue and relief efforts in the coming days.
