WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Welcome to your October enews

Since your last e-newsletter, the 2023 whaling season in Iceland has closed. I am saddened to tell you that 25 majestic fin whales fell victim to the harpoons. Of course that’s 25 too many, but it could have been so much worse. You helped to secure a temporary suspension of the hunts over the summer which saved approximately 120 whales, and we’re feeling hopeful that the end of Icelandic whaling is in sight. Years of campaigning has paid off and the majority of the Icelandic public now opposes whaling. Thank you once again for all your support!

For now, the future of the hunts remains uncertain, but I can promise you that we will do everything we can to prevent the ships from leaving the harbour in June 2024 for another hunt season – I will keep you updated. For the full story, please click on the link below.

FULL STORY

Following the positive impact your efforts made in Iceland, I’m excited to share our plans to end pilot whale hunts in the Faroes. We both know that whales are intelligent beings crucial in our fight against the climate crisis, and we want to support Faroese communities to protect the intelligent beings who live around their islands. Watch the video below to find out more.

how we need to support Faroes communities to end the whale and dolphin hunts

This is where you come in. You can help inspire the hearts and minds of people in the Faroe Islands by clicking the link below and sharing one word that sums up why you love and appreciate whales. You shifted public opinion in Iceland, let’s do the same in the Faroes! Stay tuned to see what we create with your words.

HELP INSPIRE

Thank you so much for your continued support. Together, we will create a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free.

Help safeguard whales, dolphins and their habitats today? — WDC

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation
Protect Risso's dolphins

Firstly, I wanted to say thank you so much, your support reminds us that so many people like you care about protecting whales and dolphins.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day when everyone, everywhere can do something to support the good causes that mean so much. I hope you may be able to help with a project which is close to my heart, our citizen science project, Shorewatch. I have the joy of working with over 200 Shorewatch volunteers who take part in 10-minute land-based surveys for whales and dolphins off the coast of Scotland. My wish is to expand this project to recruit and train more volunteers.

We have already secured over half the funds. A small gift from you will take us closer to being able to expand Shorewatch and help safeguard whale and dolphin habitats around Scotland. Can you help today?

YES, I WILL DONATE

My favourite species are the Risso’s dolphins, whose big, unique, scar-covered bodies are regularly seen around the Isle of Lewis.  Together, with our Shorewatch volunteers and WDC researchers, we have catalogued around 300 individual Risso’s dolphins and determined that they use this area as a year-round feeding and breeding ground.  In 2020, this hard work led to the Scottish government designating these waters as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) for Risso’s dolphins. But we can’t stop there.

A donation will help protect all species that use this MPA and discover what other species use this area through our Shorewatch volunteers.

We need to raise £40,000 and have already secured £26,000 to support our fieldwork in the Isle of Lewis thanks to RS Macdonald and NatureScot, so your donation today will have an even bigger impact.

I WOULD LIKE TO HELP

We know times are challenging right now, but we wanted to let you know we are so incredibly grateful for your support .

You helped keep the ban on hunting whales

Our expert team has been at the meeting of the International Whaling Commission. This is where governments make decisions about the conservation of whales.

We were campaigning to make sure the ban on commercial whaling was upheld – and we succeeded. We were also convincing policymakers that we need to save the whale to save the world.

It’s your support that gets us to these meetings where huge decisions are made. Ed Goodall (meet him in the video above) and the team asked me to say a heartfelt ‚thank you so much‘ for the financial and moral support you give them.

YES, I’LL DONATE

We cannot fight for the mental and physical freedom of whales and dolphins without you. If everyone who received my letter gave a donation of £15, it would help to:

  • Communicate your concerns to TUI at the World Travel Market, the leading international travel event
  • Present to ABTA, the UK’s largest travel association, to ensure industry welfare guidelines stipulate ALL captive dolphin experiences are unacceptable
  • Help tour operators phase out whale and dolphin exploitation and ensure captive individuals no longer have to perform
  • Prevent the construction of new captive attractions by applying public pressure, lobbying authorities and implementing tighter in-country welfare legislation
  • Work with tour operators and dolphin facilities to create coastal sanctuaries where captive whales and dolphins can ‘retire’ or be released

Depressed. Drugged. Desperate. See the world through a captive whale or dolphin’s eyes and help uncover the #DarkSideofCaptivty.

Whales and dolphins like Kiska (pictured below) are intelligent, emotional, social, far-travelling beings. Like us, their mental health suffers when they are confined to the same space, day after day and their choice about how to spend their days is removed.

Yet they are torn from the wild, kept in tanks and exhibited for our entertainment. Many are still forced to perform in shows or interact with tourists in so-called ‘bucket list’ activities like swim-with-the-dolphins experiences.

Holiday companies fuel this whale and dolphin mental health crisis by promoting these ‘attractions’ to their customers.

WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation

Welcome to your July enews

Will we ever be able to communicate with whales and dolphins? Do they have emotions? Do they dream? Can we save them? These are some of the great questions our experts – WDC’s Philippa Brakes and conservation biologist Joe Roman – attempt to answer in this video. It’s part of our Reinventing the whale series which takes you on a deep dive into the fascinating world of the whale.

video

We never stop being amazed by whales and dolphins. Humans have just recorded a sighting of a live Sato’s beaked whale for the very first time, and fin whales are returning to their old Antarctic feeding grounds as they start to recover from 20th century whaling.

Some days working in whale and dolphin conservation are tougher than others. Dealing with the ever-present horrors of hunting and captivity can grind us down, but we are inspired by three things and they are what motivate us:

  1. Whales and dolphins are awesome and deserve protection
  2. We CAN save them
  3. We have the best supporters in the world by our side to help us

Thank you to everyone who signed our petition on change.org calling on Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre to stop cruel experiments on young minke whales.

We tried to get a Norwegian minister to accept the petition but we were met with refusal after refusal. So, our petition starter Vicky Moens made this heartfelt video and we sent a Norwegian version directly to the PM’s office, representing almost 100,000 of you.

We need to keep up the pressure and you can help by sending an email or tweet. It’s all set up for you on our action page and will take just a couple of minutes.
