Der Europaparlamentarier Sven Giegold hat mit einigen seiner Kolleginnen und Kollegen eine Kampagne gegen die Übernahme des Agrarkonzerns Monsanto durch die deutsche Bayer AG gestartet. Wir möchten Ihnen diese Kampagne vorstellen und zur Teilnahme empfehlen.

es ist der gefährliche Plan für einen neuen Mega-Konzern: Bayer will für mindestens 62 Milliarden Euro den US-Agrochemiekonzern Monsanto schlucken. Der Übernahmepoker läuft derzeit beim Feilschen um den Preis. Mit Eurer und Ihrer Hilfe können wir dies noch verhindern.

Denn dieser Deal hätte fatale Folgen: Bayer könnte fast im Alleingang entscheiden, was auf unseren Felder wächst und somit auf unseren Tellern landet. Der Konzern würde den Saatgutmarkt beherrschen. Wettbewerb, Wahlfreiheit für die Erzeuger und die Artenvielfalt werden durch diese Mega-Fusion bedroht.

Die EU-Kommission kann diesen Deal über die europäische Fusionskontrolle verhindern. Schon jetzt muss sie eine strenge Prüfung ankündigen. Jetzt braucht es starkes Engagement aus der Zivilgesellschaft, um den Druck auf die Entscheidungsträger zu erhöhen.

Gemeinsam mit meinen Grünen Fraktionskollegen Martin Häusling und Michel Reimon habe ich eine Petition auf der europäischen Kampagnenplattform WeMove.eu gestartet. Andere Kolleginnen und Kollegen tragen die gleiche Peition in anderen Sprachen.

Just last week we struck a huge blow against Monsanto. An EU vote scheduled for this week to re-approve Roundup chemical glyphosate had to be cancelled last minute due to lack of support from governments like France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. Thanks to our collective power, it looks like the tides might finally be turning against Monsanto and glyphosate. We have also made great strides to protect our bees from Bayer’s toxic neonics. It was also thanks to SumOfUs members that France moved towards a full ban on bee-killing neonicotinoids.  We are going at this with all guns blazing. We’ll target lawmakers, antitrust regulators and force politicians to take a public stance. Breaking news: We just found out that Bayer is definitely moving forward on its plans to buy Monsanto.

If Bayer succeeds, we are facing a giant, international mega-corporation with total control over nearly everything we eat: the biggest seed company and pesticide company all rolled into one.

This would spell disaster for our bees and vulnerable farmers. It’ll usher in a new era of sterile crops soaked in cancer-causing pesticides.

• mobilise citizens in Bayer’s home country Germany, where political leaders are already under massive pressure because of our campaign to ban Monsanto’s glyphosate in Europe

Together, we were able to help stop the Syngenta-Monsanto merger last year because we showed that a corporation that big would have monopolistic power over farmers and the entire agriculture industry.

This new merger being discussed right now could be even worse.

Once a merger like this goes through, it’s often impossible to undo the damage — we need to act now to nip this merger in the bud.

Monsanto is giving us a taste of what it does when it doesn’t get its way. Right now in Argentina, it’s withholding new soybean seed technology from farmers — the country’s biggest cash crop — because it doesn’t want oversight from the Argentinian government.

It’s likely that this giant new mega-company will use its size to “influence” more governments and people with their shady tactics. Let’s make sure they don’t get away with that.
