#Justice4MrPatel Google Hangout 3/22 3 PM EST

Diane Wong –  18MR

We invite you to join us for a national Google Hangout to talk about the Sureshbhai Patel case and police brutality on Tuesday, March 22nd at 3pm EST co-hosted by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) to:

https://plus.google.com/events/cecn1b9kjver65u2f5r5v7hpo44

1. Get a legal update on this case

2. Join an organized national effort calling for justice

3. Learn more about how you can talk to your families and communities about police brutality and the Movement for Black Lives

We will hear from Mr. Patel’s son, Chirag Patel and Asha Kiran president Bhavani Kakani on updates to the civil suit that Patel and his family are pursuing. We will also discuss the connections between this case and the Movement for Black Lives and broader call for police accountability. Other speakers include Suman Raghunathan and Lakshmi Sridaran, South Asian Americans Leading Together; Deepa Iyer, Center for Social Inclusion; Purvi Shah, Center for Constitutional Rights and Law for Black Lives; Fahd Ahmed, Desis Rising Up and Moving; and Sasha Wijeyratne, National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance. Make sure to RSVP for the hangout at http://bit.ly/1Lnesx2 and join the discussion on Twitter with the tag #Justice4MrPatel and tweet us at your questions.

Last February, a Madison, Alabama police officer, Eric Parker brutally beat and partially paralyzed Indian grandfather, Sureshbhai Patel, who was taking a morning walk in his son’s neighborhood.

Using Unreasonable Force for Speaking No English

A national outcry ensued from South Asian communities and organizers continue to demand justice for the Patel family. What followed were two federal trials in which a hung jury split along racial lines ultimately resulted in mistrials both times. And, this January, the case was dismissed, effectively acquitting Parker on the grounds that the evidence presented did not prove beyond reasonable doubt that Parker was guilty of a crime.

As our community continues to seek justice in this case, we cannot separate this from the narrative of police misconduct and violence that the Movement for Black Lives has elevated.

South Asian communities must continue to show up for and lend support to the Movement for Black lives, which has been calling for community action on the epidemic of police violence that disproportionately affects Black men, women, children, and transgender people. Unlike the many cases of Black men and women being killed by the police that do not even result in an indictment, Sureshbhai Patel’s case has moved to trial, but still has led to no accountability on the part of law enforcement. This discussion will be one of many we hope to host on how South Asians can mobilize for justice and join this ongoing national movement.

Chicago Deserves Better Than This

Scott Roberts, ColorOfChange.org

One week from today, Chicago voters can oust of one of the worst prosecutors in America. For two terms, Anita Alvarez has held the position of Cook County State’s Attorney, maintaining a record of misconduct and over-prosecuting Black communities, leading to numerous wrongful convictions.

Anita waited more than a year to release the video of a cop fatally shooting 17-year old Laquan McDonald1 — a decision that she defended saying, “I didn’t think any mistakes were made”.2 It took a judge’s ruling to release the video, after it was determined city officials could no longer withhold it from the public.

Anita let the police officer who murdered Rekia Boyd walk free. She’s been accused of deliberately setting up the prosecution to fail, leading the killer cop to be dismissed of all charges.3

This week, as Chicago voters head to the polls leading up to next Tuesday’s primary election, Color of Change is joining with allies to uplift the efforts by activists in Chicago. We created a tool that allows anyone to play a role in this critical election both online and offline. With your help, we’ll ensure the message on the ground reaches the national stage.

Join the #ByeAnita movement, a grassroots effort confronting Alvarez begun by grassroots organizers in Chicago. We’ll share breaking updates and opportunities to get involved between now and the election.

We know our efforts are working — Anita recently lost the backing of the Democratic Party who publicly endorsed her opponent Kim Foxx, a Chicago native and advocate for criminal justice reform.4

It’s time to hold the system accountable by denying to one of its strongest defenders the opportunity to repeat the harm done to too many Chicago families and communities, specifically, Black families and communities due to a lack of accountability and oversight of the Chicago Police Department.

Support organizers in Chicago working to oust Anita Alvarez. Join the #ByeAnita movement now!

Peace,

— Scott, Rashad, Arisha, Enchanta and the rest of the ColorOfChange team.

P.S. I love it when our community comes together during moments like this. Since we’re less than a week out, will you volunteer a few minutes to make some calls to Chicago voters remind them to vote in this important election? Click here to get started.

ICH  BIN  LUISE

About last Thursday

Rashad Robinson, ColorOfChange.org

On Thursday, I woke up, put on my favorite suit and brought your voice, stories, and demands – our work together – to the President of the United States of America.

Along with other civil rights leaders, I visited the White House to meet with President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, Senior Advisor Valarie Jarrett and several members of the President’s team. I went to represent you and all ColorOfChange members who have been calling for action from the executive branch – the President and the Department of Justice – on a wide range of criminal justice and police reforms. I went to the meeting because your voice has helped make ColorOfChange unignorable. I accepted the invite knowing that no single meeting or gesture changes power – but the work to organize, agitate and amplify must continue and increase. I went with belief that presence alone isn’t power – it doesn’t change written or unwritten rules – but presence is important to building power. And without outside power, our movement has no leverage. I went to the meeting understanding that any elected official despite their politics, inspirational backstory or good intentions has to be pushed and challenged. That is how we make democracy work.

During the 90-minute meeting with the President and his staff, I reminded him of ColorOfChange members working to fight the race-baiting attacks against him and his family during the 2008 election, our two-year corporate campaign that led to the firing of Glenn Beck (our campaign forced over 200 advertisers to pull their support from the Fox News show) for Beck’s racist attacks on the President and his consistent on-air racism. However, I spent the majority of my time urging the DOJ to use its power to deal with the civil right violations with money bail that kept folks like Sandra Bland in Texas and Kalief Browder in Rikers Island in the hands of the state.

I spoke about our work around district attorney and prosecutor elections (the President responded by saying that it was a very smart strategy – I welcomed him to bring his voice to this work). I talked through our current and upcoming campaigns on private prisons, prison labor and all the other structures that incentivize mass incarceration and directly asked the President to help us elevate the connections between money in politics and mass incarceration. I spoke about the need for culture change and our growing work in Hollywood to change images and perceptions because in less than a year President Obama will be a powerful person with a big platform and some free time. I also let him know that we had some challenges with the federal legislation on criminal justice reform; I made it clear that while we respect the desire to “get something done,” the amendments being batted around would do more long-term damage than good.

At ColorOfChange, we value our independence and haven’t spent a lot of our time in endless meetings on Capitol Hill or in government offices. We’ve worked to build the type of people-centered campaigns that rely more on our strategy and members than our money and connections. Know that everyday the ColorOfChange team works to elevate your voices through the type of campaigns that force those in power to respond and listen – to translate our presence in the world into the power that changes it. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and lead. It is a tremendous responsibility and honor.

My sister, Gynnya was found dead.

Demand Kentucky’s Juvenile Detention Center release unedited surveillance tapes and provide answers for Gynnya’s death

Gynnya McMillen is my sister. On January 11, she was found dead in her room at a juvenile detention center, just one day after she arrived. Gynnya was a healthy sixteen year old, and the police have given us very little information about her death. Troubling media reports are now making it clear that my sister’s time at Lincoln Village Detention Center was filled with violence and neglect.

We are being told to trust the same police who have withheld information and initially dismissed the notion of foul play. We need to know what happened to Gynnya now. We know that there’s surveillance video of Gynnya that might provide answers – but so far, the police are refusing to let us see it.

Please join my family in demanding that Lincoln Village Regional Juvenile Detention Center release the surveillance video and provide answers about Gynnya’s death.

http://act.colorofchange.org/sign/Gynnya/?t=3&akid=5348.2073393.NnkPXh

Since Gynnya’s death, we have been calling on the detention center to explain what happened and were told that there was nothing to explain about my sister’s passing.1 The state police even told the press that after interviewing everyone involved, they ‘didn’t expect that foul play was involved’ -even though they admitted that they couldn’t confirm if Gynnya was properly monitored or why she was left in a room by herself.2

Last Friday, disturbing details from Gynnya’s time in the detention center started coming to light. It was reported that upon arrival, multiple detention staff immobilized Gynnya using a martial-arts hold after she refused to take off her sweatshirt. It was also found that the center neglected to perform protocol 15 minute check ups on her.3 Even once they discovered she was not breathing, the center nurse did not immediately begin resuscitation. After realizing Gynnya was unresponsive, they waited 11 minutes, had a conversation with police and, finally, the nurse began performing CPR.4

Since these revelations, several juvenile justice advocates have expressed alarm at the way Gynnya was treated.5 It was Gynnya’s first time going to a juvenile detention center and although she had no prior criminal history, a court-designated worker made the decision for Gynnya to be entered into the criminal justice system instead of less traumatic options, such as myself or her many uncles, aunts and cousins who loved and supported her.3 However, as with adults, Black youth who have not been convicted of any crimes are placed in detention centers at higher rates for similar crimes as their counterparts. Also, Lincoln Village receives government funding per day for each child they have in custody. There are so many suspicious factors surrounding the death of Gynnya, and we need answers now!

Please join my family in demanding that Lincoln Village Regional Juvenile Detention Center release the surveillance video and provide answers about Gynnya’s death.

http://act.colorofchange.org/sign/Gynnya/?t=3&akid=5348.2073393.NnkPXh

No child’s life should ever end after entering a detention center. No family should have to go this long without knowing what happened to their loved one. Please stand with me, the rest of Gynnya’s family and the Kentucky community in calling for justice.

Thank you,

Greg, Gynnya McMillen’s Brother

Neuigkeit zur Petition Pegida-Gründer will schon wieder Kritiker aufhängen

Martin Nieswandt

Hamburg, Deutschland

So weit, so schlimm.
Und was macht Pegida-Gründer Lutz Bachmann ?
