The population of the world’s largest primate — a gorilla subspecies that lives in a region of Central Africa beset by conflict — is collapsing.

Fewer than 3,800 of these gorillas still live in the wild, according to an alarming report published this week by the Wildlife Conservation Society, Flora and Fauna International and the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature.

While PepsiCo’s telling you this, it’s putting endangered species like orangutans, elephants, and rhinos at grave risk. Its palm oil policy is not deforestation-free — it contains a giant loophole that excludes its joint venture partner in Indonesia, IndoFood.

So we’re going to hijack the campaign by bombarding PepsiCo on Facebook. Cheetos‘ may be trying to silence us — it looks like it has been deleting our posts, so we’re heading straight to PepsiCo to deliver our message.

Marking Sri Lanka’s first monumental step towards Protection of its Animals, the Sri Lankan cabinet approved the new draft of the Animal Welfare Bill and pledged to continue its commitment in order to ensure the enactment of the bill as law. We thank you and count on your continued support in the future to get the Bill passed and implemented.

We, the undersigned, hereby appeal,

H.E. Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe

To evaluate and pass the new/ amended Animal Welfare Bill in parliament so that Sri Lanka as a nation would have the necessary legislations in place to protect animals from the atrocities that they go through on a daily basis.The current outdated bill was drafted in 1906 and the new bill that was drafted and proposed  in 2006 to the parliament has been pending for the past nine years. Today, our animals; stray, captive, domestic or wild, face many difficulties at the hands of humans. They are beaten, abused, stoned, shot, trapped and killed on a daily basis and the need for proper legislation by way of an amended Animal Welfare Bill has never been stronger than it is right now.The objectives of the new Animal Welfare Bill are as follows:

a) To recognize a duty of care on the part of persons in charge of animals to treat the animals humanely and to take all reasonable steps to ensure the well-being of those animals;

b) To prevent cruelty to animals and to secure the protection and welfare of animals;

c) To prohibit certain categories of conduct in relation to animals and impose penalties for breach of the law;

d) To establish a National Animal Welfare Authority and to provide for regulations and codes of practice for prevention of cruelty to animals and for animal welfare;

e) To raise community awareness on animal welfare; and

f) To repeal the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance

It is time to start caring not only for ourselves but for all living beings in our country. The voice for this change is getting louder on behalf of innocent animals and we as citizens want to see this change on behalf of the animals who have no voice to speak for themselves.Only few countries have the diversity of animals that Sri Lanka is blessed with; It is time we valued this great asset and gave them the respect and life they deserve. This change will not only benefit the country as whole but also bring due international recognition.  If Sri Lanka is to be considered a truly compassionate nation, we need to show the world our commitment to both people and animals. We want to be the generation that made a change in the lives of our animals for the sake of the next generation.
