Welcome to your September enews
It’s safe to say that it’s been a month of highs and lows for whales and dolphins around the globe. I want to say a huge thank you for your continued support.
Let’s kick off with some good news …
On 8 September, the WDC team and I stood united outside 10 Downing Street and presented our #EndCaptivityForever petition. We were there to represent you and the whales and dolphins, so thank you. We are calling on the government to make it illegal to hold a whale or dolphin in a tank in the UK ever again. We’re forging relationships with MPs who can champion a legal ban on whale and dolphin captivity.
On a more sombre note …
Sadly, the suspension on whaling has been lifted and XX fin whales have been slaughtered in Icelandic waters. But, there’s still hope. One of the whaling ships has been suspended for violating animal welfare regulations, and there’s a proposed bill to ban whaling. I will bring you the full story in your October enews, but please rest assured that we are working extremely hard behind the scenes to permanently end whaling in Iceland.

You’ll be pleased to hear that 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas have been identified, making 242 worldwide, covering over 70% of the ocean. This will benefit Commerson’s and franciscana dolphins and others.
